Steps:

5-Methylisophthalaldehyde 3

General procedure: (5-Methyl-1,3-phenylene)dimethanol 2 (1.00 g, 6.62 mmol) and PCC (3.20 g, 15.2 mmol) were dissolvedin CH2Cl2 at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 12 h at room temperature, and insoluble materialswere removed with celite filtration. The filtrate was evaporated, and the residue was purified by columnchromatography (CH2Cl2 to AcOEt/hexane 1/2) to yield 5-methylisophthalaldehyde 3 (873 mg, 89%) as awhite-colored amorphous mass. Analytical data were identical to those reported in the literature.
