Steps:

General procedure for the visible light mediated oxidation of acetoarylones

General procedure: To an oven-dried round bottom flask equipped with a magnetic stir bar was charged with dioxane dibromide (1.1 equiv.), tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) chloride (2 mol%), acetoarylone (AA, 1.0 equiv.), sodium ascorbate (3.0 equiv.) and dry CH₃CN. The mixture was irradiated under a 5W Blue LED bulb at a distance of 5 cm under open-air atmosphere. After stirring at room temperature for 8-10 h, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by either recrystallization or filtration thru short pad silica gel column chromatography using hexane-ethyl acetate mixtures. The purity of the compound was confirmed by IR, ¹H and ¹³CNMR measurements, vide infra.
