Steps:
To a refluxing solution of 2,4,6-trihydroacetophenone-monohydrate (10 g, 53.7 mmol) and K2CO3 (15 g, 108.7 mmol) in acetone (150 mL), (CH3)2SO4 was added at three hour intervals (3 x 3.5 mL, 40.0 mmol). The solution was filtered and the solvent was evaporated to afford 2,4-dimethoxy-6-hydroxyacetophenone as a yellow solid (98%).
