Tetramethoxymethane has been prepared by heating a solution of Sodium Methoxide in methanol with chloropicrin, Trichloroacetonitrile, or thiocarbonyl perchlorate; the best yields have been obtained with the perchlorate. Alternatively, disodium hexamethoxystannate (prepared in situ from sodium methoxide and tetrachlorostannane) can be refluxed with Carbon Disulfide in methanol to form the orthocarbonate.

50 mmol of methanol, 0.02 mmol of V 2 O 5 , 0.0025 mmol of CoOx/C (supporting amount of 0.1% by weight),30 mmol of methanol was added to a 20 mL stainless steel reaction vessel lined with polytetrafluoroethylene, charged with 1.8 MPa of air, heated to 180 ° C, and reacted at this temperature for 0.1 h.The methanol conversion was 80% and the tetramethoxymethane selectivity was 86%.
