Reaction Conditions:

with sulfuric acid at 20; for 18 h;

Steps:

Dimethyl glutarate (1l)⁷
Glutaric anhydride (29.4 mmol, 3.35 g) was dissolved in anhydrous MeOH (100 mL) and conc. H₂SO₄ (5.9 mmol, 0.31 mL) was added. After being stirred at room temperature for 18 h, the mixture was concentrated to a half volume and quenched with water (40 mL) afterwards. The aqueous phase was extracted with CH₂Cl₂ (3 x 50 mL), the combined organic phases were washed with brine (30 mL), dried over Na₂SO₄ and concentrated to give dimethyl glutarate 1l (4.53 g, 96%) as a colourless clear oil; ¹H NMR (CDCl₃): δ =1.96 (quint, J = 7.2 Hz, 2H), 2.39 (t, J = 7.2 Hz, 4H).
