Steps:
General procedure for the preparation of 2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-β-carboline-1-carboxylic acids (8).
General procedure: Tryptamines (7a-c, 60 mmol) were suspended in EtOAc (145 mL) and the aqueous solution of glyoxalic acid monohydrate (70 mmol in 70 mL water) was added to the reaction mixture. Then pH was set to 5 with the addition of a 10% aqueous K2CO3 solution and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. After the reaction was complete, the mixture was filtered and the solid product was washed with EtOAc and Et2O.
