Reference Example 39 A 1,2-dibromoethane solution (12 ml) of bromine (5.43 ml) was added dropwise over 3 hours while refluxing to a 1,2-dibromoethane solution (40 ml) of 3-methylbenzophenone (20.0 g). After heating to reflux for 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was concentrated. The residue was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (100 ml) and stirred with sodium cyanide (7.50 g) at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with an aqueous saturated solution of sodium chloride, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography to obtain 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)acetonitrile (13.8 g, yield 61%) as a yellow oil from an ethyl acetate-hexane (1:3, v/v)-eluted fraction.
