6,7-Dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin is suitable as a pH-indicator. | [Definition]
ChEBI: 6,7-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin is a hydroxycoumarin that is 4-methylcuomarin which is substituted by hydroxy groups at positions 3 and 4. A hyaluronan synthesis inhibitor. It has also been used as a fluorescent sensor to monitor the consumption of a boronic acid in Suzuki coupling reactions; fluorescence is readily detectable by the naked eye using a standard 365 nm UV lamp. It has a role as a hyaluronan synthesis inhibitor, an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent. | [in vivo]
4-Methylesculetin (5 or 25 mg/kg, p.o., daily for 8 days) decreases MPO activity, reduces the colonic levels of IL-6 and counteracts GSH depletion, showing the intestinal antiinflammatory activity in Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) rat model[1].
4-Methylesculetin (25 and 50 mg/kg, p.o., once a day from 11th day to 25th day) significantly prevents the swelling, bone and cartilage destruction at the joint in arthritic rats[2].
Animal Model: | DSS rat model[1] | Dosage: | 5 or 25 mg/kg | Administration: | p.o., daily for 8 days | Result: | Reduced MPO activity, IL-6 levels and counteracted GSH depletion induced by inflammatory process. |
Animal Model: | Arthritic rats[2] | Dosage: | 25 and 50 mg/kg | Administration: | p.o., once a day from 11th day to 25th day | Result: | Exhibited remarkable decline in paw volume and showed a prompt recovery of normal weight. |
