1 Step 1:
To a stirred suspension of methyl 2-aminoacetate hydrochloride (20.0 g, 159 mmol) in dry acetonitrile (350 ml) was added potassium carbonate (55.0 g, 398 mmol). To the stirred mixture was added dropwise (bromomethyl)benzene (54.5 g, 319 mmol, 38 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred at r.t. overnight, filtered and the filtrate was concentrated to afford methyl 2- (dibenzylamino)acetate (41.2 g, 153 mmol, 95.9% yield) as colorless oil.
