To a solution of 4-Bromo-3-methyl-benzoic acid (3 g, 13.19 mmol) in MeOH (15 ml) was added conc. H2SO4 (0.6 ml). The mixture was refluxed for 14 h, cooled to 0° C., nuetralized with saturated NaHCO3, and filtered to give a solid. This material was purified by column chromatography to give 4-Bromo-3-methyl-benzoic acid methyl ester (3.1 g, 97%) as a white solid.
