Steps:
Example 2 Preparation of Levonorgestrel (3)
A solution of 10 g of dienol ether (2) in 120 ml of tetrahydrofuran was treated with 45 ml of 20% v/v sulphuric acid solution.
The mixture was stirred at 65-68° C. for 1-2 hours.
After completion of reaction, the reaction mass was cooled to 20-30° C. and 50 ml of DM water was added.
The solid precipitated was filtered and slurried in 50 ml of water.
23% aqueous ammonia solution was added till pH of the mixture was 7 to 8.
The mixture was stirred, filtered and the wet cake was washed with water and suck dried under vacuum to obtain white solid.
