Steps:
A Step A:
Ethyl (2Z)-2-amino-2-(phenylhydrazono)acetate
To a solution of ethyl 2-amino-2-thioxoacetate (615 mg, 4.62 mmol) in a mixture of toluene (10 mL) and acetic acid (1 mL) was added phenylhydrazine (455 μL, 4.62 mmol).
The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 1 h.
The reaction mixture was poured into 1 M sodium carbonate (20 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3*10 mL).
The combined organic layers were washed with 1 M sodium carbonate (2*10 mL) and brine (1*10 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to give the title compound (652 mg) as a yellow oil, which was used directly in the next step. MS (ESI): mass calcd. for C10H13N3O2, 207.1; m/z found, 208.1 [M+H]+.
