Steps:

Example 1 4-Phenyl-piperidine-1,4-dicarboxylic Acid Mono-tert-butyl Ester A 1.0 L round-bottom flask was charged with acid (25.0 g; 66.0 mmol), K₂CO₃ (13.7 g; 99.0 mmol), Boc₂O (15.9 g; 73.0 mmol), THF (200 mL) and H₂O (200 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 12 h. The reaction mixture was acidified with 10% HCl to a pH=4 and extracted with EtOAc (500 mL). The organic was dried with MgSO₄ filtered and concentrated in vacuo to give pure product (20.6 g; 100% yield). ¹H-NMR (300 MHz) δ (ppm) 7.25-7.40 (m; 5H); 3.82 (d; 2H); 2.99 (m; 2H); 2.37 (d; 2H); 1.75 (m; 2H); 1.40 (s; 9H).
