STAGE FOUR A mixture of 13 grams of methyl 8-aminooctanoate (68 mmoles) and 200 ml. of water (11.1 moles) were heated for 2 hours at 177°C. under nitrogen. Upon cooling, the contents were removed and water stripped under reduced pressure. The residue (10.3 grams, 95 percent yield) was identified by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance to contain 8-aminooctanoic acid.
