Steps:

ethyl 1H-indole-6-carboxylate (19a)
A solution of 1H-indole-6-carboxylic acid (0.5 g, 0.3 mmol) in EtOH (15 mL), then SOCl₂ (0.22 mL, 3 mmol)was added dropwise into the solution at 0 °C and refluxed for 3 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate (50 mL) and then washed with saturated NaHCO₃ solution, finally washed with water and dried over anhydrous Na₂SO₄. The solvent was removed under vacuum to get carboxylic acid ester. The ester obtained was taken as such in the next step of synthesis. LC-MS m/z: 162.2 [M+H]⁺.
