To a mixture of 5 (4.0 g, 18.33 mmol) and EtOH (40 mL), 1 M NaOH (40 mL) was added, and the mixture was refluxed for 6 h and then cooled to room temperature and adjusted to pH 2 with 1 M HCl.
The resulting precipitate was collected via filtration, washed with water, and dried in vacuo to produce the desired compound 13 (3.47 g, 93%) as a colorless solid, which was used in the next reaction without further purification. ¹H NMR (DMSO-d₆) δ 7.17 (1H, d, J = 5.2 Hz), 7.35-7.47 (5H, m), 7.86 (1H, d, J = 5.2 Hz), 12.86 (1H, br); FAB MS m/e [M-H]^- 203.
