Reaction Conditions:

with sodium nitrite in concentrated hydrobromic acid;water

Steps:

14 (+-)-(2E,4E) N-(1,2-Dimethylpropyl)-5-[trans-2-(3,4-dibromophenyl) cyclopropyl]penta-2,4-dienamide (compound 59)
The above aminotoluene (24 g), was stirred in concentrated hydrobromic acid (230 ml) at 0° C. Sodium nitrite (9.8 g) (ex BDH) in water (35 ml) was added keeping the reaction temperature between 0° and 5°. The mixture was poured onto cuprous bromide (37 g) (ex BDH) in water (230 ml) and hydrobromic acid at 50°. After 2 hours at 50° and 18 hours at 25°, water was added and the mixture worked up in the usual manner. Purification by distillation (100°, 0.5 mmHg) gave 3,4-dibromotoluene (12.7 g). NMR ¹ H 7.53(2H,m), 6.95(1H,dd), 2.30(3H,s).
