19.B B) Preparation of nonan-2-one
A solution of 2-acetyl-octanoic acid ethyl ester (4.0 g, 18.6 mmol) in 5% aqueous NaOH solution (22.6 ml) was allowed to stir for 5 h at RT. The reaction was monitored by TLC and after completion of the reaction, mixture was acidified with 50 % H2S04 (pH = 2). Then themixture was concentrated until mass becomes half, cooled the reaction mixture to 0 °C. To this mixture saturated K2C03 solution was added and the mixture was subjected to a standard ether work up to give 1.0 g of the desired product as a liquid, which was used for the next step without purification.
