General procedure for the synthesis of a-bromo-ketones13b-c (procedure B)

General procedure: To a stirred solution of acetophenones 11b-c (1 equiv) in THF (30 mL) was added trimethylphenylammonium tribromide (1.05 equiv) at 0 C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperaturefor 12 h. The solid was filtered, and to the filtrate was added EtOAc (20 mL). The organic layer was washed successivelywith H2O (20 mL) and brine (20 mL). The organic layer was thendried over Na₂SO₄, filtered and concentrated under vacuum. The crude residue was then purified by flash chromatography on silicagel using an appropriate gradient of cyclohexane/EtOAc as eluentto give the desired α-bromo-ketone 13b-c.
