Into a 500-mL 3-necked round-bottom flask purged and maintained with an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, was placed 2-cyclopropyl-N-methoxy-N-methylacetamide (12.0 g, 83.9 mmol, 1.0 equiv), and THF (200 mL).
This was followed by the addition of MeMgBr (3 M in THF) (56.0 mL, 167.8 mmol, 2.0 equiv) dropwise with stirring at 0° C.
The mixture was stirred for 2 h at room temperature.
The reaction was then quenched by the addition of 100 mL of NH₄Cl(aq), extracted with 2*100 mL of Et₂O, combined with the organic phase, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. 6.0 g (73%) of 1-cyclopropylpropan-2-one was obtained as a yellow oil and used to the next step directly without further purification.
