The protein has a calculated MW of 19.1 kDa. The protein migrates as 22-25 kDa when calibrated against Star Ribbon Pre-stained Protein Marker under reducing (R) condition (SDS-PAGE) due to glycosylation.

白細胞介素-2（IL-2）是一種白介素，一種細胞因子免疫系統(tǒng)信號分子，是一種促白細胞激素，在身體對微生物感染的自然反應(yīng)中起著重要作用，并有助于區(qū)分外來（非自身）和自身。IL-2通過與淋巴細胞（負責免疫的細胞）表達的IL-2受體結(jié)合來介導(dǎo)其作用。成熟的人IL-2與小鼠和大鼠IL-2的aa序列同源性分別為56%和66%。人和小鼠IL-2具有跨物種活性。IL-2受體由三個亞基組成，它們以不同的預(yù)形成復(fù)合物存在于細胞表面。IL-2在胸腺T細胞發(fā)育過程中也是必要的，用于成熟被稱為調(diào)節(jié)性T細胞（T-reg）的獨特T細胞亞群。從胸腺中排出后，T-Regs的功能是防止其他T細胞識別和對抗“自身抗原”，這可能會導(dǎo)致“自身免疫”。T-Regs通過阻止反應(yīng)細胞產(chǎn)生IL-2來實現(xiàn)這一目的。因此，需要IL-2來區(qū)分自我和非自我，這是免疫系統(tǒng)的另一個獨特特征。
