Sicherheitsprofil
Variable toxicity.
Elemental tin and inorganic tin compounds
have low toxicity and are poorly absorbed
when ingested. Some inorganic tin salts are
irritating or can liberate toxic fumes on
decomposition. The latter is particularly true
of tin halogens. Tin hydride is highly toxic
with effects sirmlar to those of arsenic
hydride. Inhalation of tin dusts over a period
of years may cause pneumoconiosis. Some
of the organic tin compounds are strong
poisons. Short-chain alkyl tin compounds -
(e.g., ethyl and methyl compounds) are
particularly toxic. Generally alkyl tin
compounds are more toxic than aryl
compounds and short chain compounds are
more toxic than long-chain compounds. The
toxicity increases with the number of alkyl
groups. Tetramethyl tin chloride and triethyl
tin chloride are very toxic to the nervous
system. They are lipid soluble and can be
absorbed through the skin. Symptoms
recede slowly. The concentration of tin in
condensed mdk from cans may reach 160
ppm and could .become hazardous for
babies. Some alkyl tin compounds have high
ecotoxicity. They have been used in marine
paints to prevent growth on boat hulls, but
may have too much environmental effect
for this purpose. See also TIN and specific
compounds.
