Lithium bicarbonate or citrate is used in the treatment of BD, whereas potassium bicarbonate or citrate is used in over-the-counter drugs as active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) against urinary-tract infections (increasing the pH of the urine) in the United Kingdom. Their solubility is highly dependent on the metal and varies from sparingly soluble (e.g. Li₂CO₃) whereas others are very soluble.
