Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Chemical Properties]
Violet leaf absolute is obtained by solvent extraction, via the concrete, from
the leaves of Viola odorata L. (Violaceae). It is produced in small quantities, for
example, in Egypt.
Theabsolute is a dark green to brown liquid with a strong, green odor.Themain
constituent of the volatile fraction is (2E,6Z)-2,6-nonadienal (violet leaf aldehyde).
Violet leaf absolute is used frequently in perfume compositions, but only in very
low concentration because of its intense odor. | [Chemical Properties]
Violet leaf absolute is produced by petroleum extraction of the freshly harvested leaves. Further alcohol washing,
chilling and filtration of the alcohol extracts and subsequent evaporation in a vacuum results in the absolute. The absolute has a very
powerful and characteristic odor. Also see Violet. | [Occurrence]
Reported found in violet leaves. | [Definition]
Extractives and their physically modified derivatives. Viola odorata, Violaceae. | [Taste threshold values]
Taste characteristics at 10 ppm: green, melon, floral, fresh, waxy, grassy and leafy. | [Pharmacology]
A simple extract from violet herbage administered as a decoction (10 ml/kg body
weight) orally or sc to rats following experimentally induced inflammation showed a favourable
anti-inflammatory effect in acute and subacute (8-10-day) experiments (Kroutil & Kroutilova, 1968). |
