Is a reagent for oxidation of multiple phenols and anilines to quinones | [Uses]
Reagent for the oxidation of anilines and phenols to quinones. EPR standard. | [Purification Methods]
It forms yellow needles (dimeric) which dissolve in H2O to give the violet monomeric free radical. It is purified by dissolving (~12g) in 2M KOH (600mL) at 45o, filtering the blue solution and keeping it in a refrigerator overnight. The golden yellow crystals (10g) are filtered off, washed with MeOH (3x), then Et2O and stored in a glass container in a vacuum over KOH. It is stable indefinitely when dry.
