Hazard Information | Back Directory | [Description]
β-Glycerophosphate is a protein phosphatase inhibitor that acts as a phosphate group donor in matrix mineralization studies.1,2,3 It promotes bone matrix mineralization when delivered to osteoblasts by providing a source of phosphate ions.1 β-Glycerophosphate (10 mM) accelerates calcification of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells through an alkaline phosphatase-related mechanism.4 | [Chemical Properties]
Solid | [Uses]
β-Glycerol Phosphate was shown to have promoted mineralization in vitro by modulating bone cell metabolic activity and/or serving as a local source of inorganic phosphate ions. | [General Description]
A phosphate group donor in matrix mineralization studies. Accelerates calcification in vascular smooth muscle cells. Also acts as a protein phosphatase inhibitor. | [Biochem/physiol Actions]
Beta-Glycerophosphate is a classical serine-threonine phosphatase inhibitor used in kinase reaction buffers. BGP is often used in combination with other phosphatase/protease inhibitors for broad spectrum inhibition. It functions as an organic phosphate donor and has been used in culture media for mesenchymal stem cell differentiation to osteoblast-type cells. BGP is also used to buffer M17 media for Lactococcus culture in recombinant protein expression | [Purification Methods]
Crystallise it from water. [Attwood et al. Biochem J 253 389 1988, Beilstein 1 IV 2766.] | [References]
