tert-Butyl 4-hydroxybutanoate, 9
BH₃.Me₂S (2.0 M in THF, 6.6 mL, 13.1 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of carboxylic acid 8 (2.12 g, 12.2 mmol) in dry THF (20 mL) cooled to 0° C. The solution was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 24 h. EtOAc (100 mL) was added and the organic layer separated and washed with water (70 mL) and brine (70 mL), dried over MgSO₄, filtered and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give tert-butyl 4-hydroxybutanoate 9 (1.92 g, 12.2 mmol, quant.), which was used without any further purification as a pale yellow oil
