3.6. General Procedure for Esterification of Phosphonic Acids 1 Using Triethyl Orthoacetate Leading to Diethyl Phosphonic Esters 4
General procedure: Phosphonic acid 1 (1 mmol) and triethyl orthoacetate (5.5 mL, 30 mmol) were stirred at 90 °C (or, for sparingly soluble substrates, at a higher temperature) for 24 h under a reflux condenser. The progress of the reaction was monitored by31P NMR. The excess of orthoester was evaporated under reduced pressure and the product-dialkyl phosphonate 4-was received in pure form. In some cases, the purity of diester4was not satisfactory and additional purification by bulb-to-bulb vacuum distillation with Kugelrohr apparatus or column chromatography was performed.
