2 Synthesis of naphthalene-1, 2, 4-triyltriacetate (Thiele-winter reaction) (4)

To a 250mL three-necked flask was added 54 acetic anhydride 193.8g (1.898mol) at room temperature and 18.58g (0.190mol) of 98% 55 conc. sulfuric acid was added slowly at a rate that maintained a reaction temperature below 30°C. The mixture was brown, then 1, 56 4-naphthoquinone 50g (0.316mol) was added in portions. After the mixture was stirred at 50°C for another 30min, poured into 500g crushed ice, stirred to precipitate a grayish brown precipitate, filtered and the filter was washed with water (100mL) and dried. 102 g of gray solid was obtained, which was recrystallized from methanol (450mL) to give pure 57 product. (72.92g; 76.25% yield). M.p.135-136°C (literature [21]: 134°C).
