Steps:

Step-1: Synthesis of 3-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)propanenitrile :

To a stirred solution of potassium phthalimide (7 g, 37.8 mmol) in 50 mL DMF, 3-bromopropanenitrile (2.02 g, 15.12 mmol) was added and the mixture heated at 80°C for 3 hr. After completion, the reaction was quenched by the addition of water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to get the crude product which was purified on column to obtain the pure product (Yield = 3.15 g, 96%).1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) d 7.93- 7.90 (m, 2H), 7.79- 7.77 (m, 2H), 4.04 (t, J = 6.9 Hz, 2H), 2.83 (t, J = 6.9 Hz, 2H).
