Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: ethyl 7-chlorobenzofuran-2-carboxylatewith lithium hydroxide monohydrate;water in methanol at 25; for 2 h;
Stage #2: with hydrogenchloride in water; pH=3;

190B 7-chlorobenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid (B-292)

To a mixture of compound B-291 (1.24 g, 5.5 mmol) in methanol (7 mL) and water (7 mL) was added lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.46 g, 11 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 25 °C for 2 h, then concentrated to remove methanol, diluted with water and acidified to pH 3 with 1 M hydrochloric acid, resulting in formation of a solid. The white solid was collected by filtration and dried in vacuo to give compound B-292 (0.50 g, 46% yield). ^-NMR (DMSO- 6, 400 MHz): δ 7.79-7.77 (m, 2H), 7.62 (d, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 7.37 (t, J=7.6 Hz, 1H).
