Procedure for the synthesis of chromene-3-carbonitrile 3(a-i)

General procedure: A neat reaction was carried out by taking substituted salicylaldehydes 1(a-i) (1.0 mmol), DABCO (0.2 mmol) and acrylonitrile 2 (1.0 mmol) in one pot and stirred in room temperature to 40°C for 4-5 h. The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC checking. After completion reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, dried over anhydrous Na₂SO₄ and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by general silica gel (100-200mesh) column chromatography using ethyl acetate/hexane to furnish the pure compound 3(a-i) in 65-93% yield. All compounds were characterised through IR, NMR and Mass spectral data.
