Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1:ethyl 5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carboxylate with sodium hydroxide;water in tetrahydrofuran at 60; for 20 h;
Stage #2: with hydrogenchloride in water; pH=3 - 5

A solution of compound 1-29 (5.6 g, 1 eq.) in THF (70 mL) was treated with a1 N aqueous NaOH solution (80 mL). The resulting mixture was warmed at 60⁰C for o 20 hours, and then diluted with diethyl ether. After the mixture was extracted twice with a saturated aqueous NaHCθ3 solution, 10% HCl was added to neutralize the mixture to PH= 3~5. The aqueous layer was then extracted with diethyl ether. The combined diethyl ether layer was dried over Na₂SO₄, filtered, and concentrated to give compound I -30 (4.66 g, 95%). ¹H NMR(CDCl₃) δ.7.81-7.78 (m, 2H), 7.16-7.13 5 (d, J = 7.5 Hz, IH), 2.82 (m, 4H), 1.84-1.80 (m, 4H). ESI-M S (M+H⁺) = 177.
