EXAMPLE 1 This Example illustrates the preparation of 4-[3-(p- t -butylphenyl)- cis -cyclobutylmethyl]-2,6- cis -dimethylmorpholine (Compound No.3.1 in Table 1). A mixture of p- t -butylbenzyl bromide (20.44 g, 0.09 mol) and potassium cyanide (11.72 g, 0.18 ml) in a saturated solution of 18-crown-6 (50 ml) was refluxed at 80°C for 5 hours. After cooling to room temperature the solution was poured into water, extracted with dichloromethane and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate. Removal of the solvent gave a yellow liquid which was purified by column chromatography (silica eluted with petroleum ether/ethyl acetate 9:1) to give p- t -butylbenzyl cyanide (15.4 g, 99%).
