Steps:
Reaction of 2-(p-toluoyl)benzoic acid 1 with hydrazines to givephthalazines 2a-d; general procedure
General procedure: A solution of 2-(p-toluoyl)benzoic acid 1 (2 mmol) in dry toluene(30 mL) and an equivalent amount of hydrazine hydrate, phenylhydrazine, 2-pyridyl hydrazine or thiosemicarbazide was refluxed for3-4 h. The solid product formed during the reaction was filtered off, washed with light petroleum ether and recrystallised from a suitablesolvent to give compounds 2a-d.
