Step 3. 4-(ethylsulfonyl)-2-nitrophen Nitric acid (0.1 mL, 3 mmol) was added to a mixture of 4-(ethylsulfonyl)phenol (0.5 g, 3 mmol) in acetic acid (9 mL) at room temperature. The mixture was heated to 80 °C for 3 h then cooled to room temperature and partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSC , filtered, and concentrated to yield crude product. The product was crystallized from ethyl ether to afford 4-(ethylsulfonyl)-2-nitrophenol as a pale yellow solid (0.59 g, 100%). LCMS calculated for CsHioNOsS (M+H)+: m/z = 232.1; found: 232.0.
