B. 3-Amino-4-chloro-5-methylisoxazole To a solution of 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole (9.8 g, 100 mmol) in methylene chloride (200 mL) was added N-chlorosuccinimide (14.6 g, 110 mmol) at 0° C. over the period of 20 min. The reaction mixture was stirred overnight. To work up the reaction mixture was concentrated and partitioned between 1N NaOH (150 mL) ethyl acetate (400 mL). The organic layer was washed with 1N NaOH, water, brine, dried over MgSO₄ then concentrated to a brown solid. For purification the product was reprecipitated from chloroform/hexane to give 3-amino-4-chloro-5-methylisoxazole as a brownish solid (9.5 g, 71%).
