Stepl: To a solution of 1 (3.5 g, 20 mmol) in acetone (20 mL) and ethanol (2 mL) was added aqueous NaOH (10%, 15 mL) and water (80 mL). The mixture was stirred at rt for 2 h, extracted with EA (3 x 50 mL). The organic layers were dried and concentrated to give 2 (4.3 g, 100%).
