Steps:
(3-Fluoro-4-methoxyphenyl)methanol (64)
Borane-dimethylsulfide complex (2.79 mL, 29.40 mmol) and trimethyl borate (3.34 mL, 29.40 mmol) were added to a solution of 3-fluoro-4-methoxybenzoic acid (2.50 g, 14.69 mmol) in THF (80 mL, dist. Na) at 0 °C, and the solution warmed to r.t. and stirred overnight. The mixture was then cooled to 0 °C, and quenched with MeOH (10 mL). The solvent was then evaporated and the residue was partitioned between EtOAc and water. The organic layer was then dried and evaporated to afford the product 64. Yield = 2.35 g, 100%. 1H NMR (CDC13) δ 7.11 (1H, dd, J = 2.0, 11.9 Hz), 7.06 (1H, ddd, J = 0.9, 2.0, 9.1 Hz), 6.94 (1H, dd, J = 8.4, 8.4 Hz), 4.61 (2H, s), 3.89 (3H, s), 1.73 (1H, s). Found: [M-OH] =139.7
