To a solution of 60% NaH (0.373 g,9.34 mmol) in THF (20 mL), phenol (1 g, 7.78 mmol) was added dropwise at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 10 min. and then ethyl iodide (1.27 g, 8.17 mmol) was added. The solution was stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted twice with diethyl ether. The combined organic layers, were washed with water, saturated brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 13.1 as colorless oil.
