(Step 5)A solution of the compound (1.00 g) obtained in step 4 and MnO2 (2.06 g) in toluene (30 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 12 hr. MnO2 (2.06 g) was further added, and the mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 2 hr. Insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (solvent; 5% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give 3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde (0.609 g, 62%) as a pale-yellow oil.1H-NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3):δ 7.86 (1H, s), 8.02 (1H, s), 8.04 (1H, s), 10.00 (1H, s)
