To a solution of 298 3-methoxy-5-nitro-pyridine-2-carbonitrile (27 g, 151 mmol, 1 eq.) in 117 THF (100 mL)/54 EtOH (500 mL) were added Fe (4 g, 754 mmol, 5 eq.) and a solution of 157 NH4Cl (24.2 g, 452 mmol, 3 eq.) in 53 H2O (50 mL). The mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 30 mins, then diluted with THF (500 mL) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated, diluted with H2O (500 mL) and then extracted with DCM (400 mL×3). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give 300 5-amino-3-methoxy-pyridine-2-carbonitrile (14.5 g, crude) as a pale yellow solid. ESI [M+H]=150.1
