Steps:
1.1 General procedure for the synthesis of 3-(hydroxymethyl)quinolines (25-28)
General procedure: To a solution of quinoline-3-carbaldehydes (1.0 eq) in absolute methanol (10 mL), sodium borohydride (1.2 eq) was added portion wise over a period of 30 min with constant stirring at room temperature. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the resultant crude triturated with water to form crystalline solid, which was filtered, washed with water (10 mL) and air-dried. The crude product was recrystallised from methanol to afford desired compounds in good yields (88-94%).
