To a flask charged with methyl 2-(phenylamino)benzoate (5.00 g, 22.0 mmol) was added THF (50 mL). The flask was cooled20 to -78 °C and a methyl lithium solution (3.0 M in diethoxymethane, 22.0 mL, 66.0 mmol) was added over 30 min. The reaction was stirred at -78 °C. After 30 min, the flask was removed from the -78 °C bath and stirred at rt. After 1 h, the reaction mixture was quenched with ice water, and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and brine, and then dried over MgSCv The resulting solution was filtered and25 concentrated to afford the product as in 99% yield.
