Ethane (10 L), propane (10 L), D-mannitol (10 KG, 54.9 mol), anhydrous tin dichloride (10 g, 0.05 mol) were added to the reaction vessel; the mixture was warmed to reflux and the reaction mixture was allowed to stand for 1 hour.
