Steps:

iV-Ethyl-l, 2-phenyIenediamineTo a solution of l-ethyl-2-nitroaniline (5.0 g, 30.0 mmol) in EtOH (100 mL) was added 10% Pd on carbon (1.24 g). The mixture was reacted in a Parr apparatus under 50 psi of H₂ gas for 2 h. The mixture was filtered through diatomaceous earth. The diatomaceous earth was washed with EtOAc, and the combined organic solvents were concentrated in vacuo to give the product as brown oil (4.0 g, 100% yield), which was used directly in the next step. H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl₃) 5 6.72-6.68 (m, 4H), 3.19-3.12 (m, 5H), 1.28 (t, J= 7.1 Hz, 3H). M/Z 136.
