Marigold, an annual herb native to Mexico, is an excellent source of lutein and an ideal raw material for the production and development of lutein. Lutein is extracted from the natural plant Tagetes erecta by physical method, which is safe and non-toxic, fully complies with the relevant standards of FAO/WHO, and is effective, scientific, safe and stable.

What is marigold lutein extract?

Tagetes erecta lutein extract lutein plant extract resin lutein (also known as phytolutein), English name lutein, lutein is a kind of carotenoid, which is a natural pigment existing in various vegetables, fruits, flowers, plants and algae. Because of its high color, strong coloring power and high nutritional value, it has been widely used in medicine, food health, feed additives, etc.

Extraction method

At present, the main methods used for marigold lutein extract at home and abroad are:

1. Enzymatic treatment

The treatment time is too long, a large amount of water in the enzyme treatment process needs to be removed before extraction, and the cost of the enzyme is high, which limits the practical application of this method;

2. Supercritical CO2 extraction

It can only effectively extract lipophilic substances. For substances with strong polarity, it can hardly be extracted under reasonable temperature and pressure, and the selectivity is not high, leading to poor separation effect;

The solubility of solute is not sensitive to the change of temperature and pressure, which increases the energy consumption when solute is separated from supercritical fluid;

3. Microwave assisted extraction

Microwave radiation penetrates the extraction solvent and enters the plant cells. The heating process will destroy the active components of the target product.

At present, the industry generally uses solvent extraction to separate lutein, and some use macroporous adsorption resin to adsorb lutein, but solvent residues are inevitable in the marigold lutein extract produced by solvent extraction.
