Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Colorless monoclinic prismatic crystal, odorless, with burning sensation after taste. Neutral to litmus reagent. Easily soluble in chloroform, ethanol and ether, soluble in benzene and acetic acid, almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether [1]. It can be extracted from the dried near mature or mature fruit of Piper nigrum L. It has good antagonism against experimental electric convulsions in mice, and has antagonism to varying degrees against convulsions and audiogenic seizures caused by pentylenetetrazol, tetrandrine, strychnine, and intracerebroventricular injection of tubocurarine and glutamate. It is also effective for some types of epilepsy. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrum.
