What is L(+)-Arginine?
L(+)-Arginine (L-Arginine) is an amino acid that helps the body build proteins. Proteins are important components of the body's make-up and are involved in various aspects of life activities. L-Arginine is considered a semi-essential or conditionally essential molecule and is often supplemented during pregnancy, infancy, critical illness and trauma. L-Arginine has a role in the production of NO and other amino acids. NO is a signalling molecule that is required for a variety of bodily processes and functions, including blood flow regulation, mitochondrial function and cellular communication. L-Arginine can be used to treat a variety of conditions including chest pain or tightness (angina), erectile dysfunction, heart failure, high blood pressure, and migraine headaches.
Benefits of L(+)-Arginine for males
L(+)-Arginine has a variety of benefits for the body and is generally considered safe. It may be effective in lowering blood pressure and reducing symptoms of angina and PAD. In males, low levels of L-Arginine may be associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). Oral L-Arginine may improve sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction due to physical causes. l-Arginine may also improve testosterone levels and the activity of key enzymes of steroidogenesis that are reduced by T-2 toxin in testicular interstitial cells.
Benefits of L(+)-Arginine for females
Some studies suggest that L-arginine infusion may lower blood pressure in pregnant women with hypertension and may also lower blood pressure in women with pregnancy complications of Preeclampsia. A few studies suggest that oral L-arginine may help prevent Preeclampsia in pregnant women. In addition, L(+)-Arginine may help control blood sugar and vasodilatory effects in diabetics. Research suggests that L-Arginine supplementation may also have a positive effect on aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance.
