Alpha-linolenic acid
Jun 2,2023
Alpha-linolenic acid is a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in plants, that occurs in flaxseed, canola, soy, and certain fish oils. The omega-3 fatty acids that are in fish oil, are called eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Your body can change alpha-linolenic acid into EPA and DHA. However, some researchers suggest that less than 1% of ALA is converted to physiologically effective levels of EPA and DHA.
Function
Linoleic acid maintains the skin's impermeability to water. It is known to inhibit melanin production and reduce hyperpigmentation. Its anti-inflammatory properties are also beneficial for skin prone to blemishes, and they can help improve hyperpigmentation by reducing the release of inflammatory cells which may contribute to pigmentation disorders.
Health Benefits
Walnuts which are rich in alpha-linolenic acid---have been shown to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in people with high cholesterol. Some studies found that alpha-linolenic acid may help lower cholesterol.
Diets or supplements that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a slight lowering effect on blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. One study on a large population found that consuming a diet high in alpha-linolenic acid led to a 30% reduction in the risk of high blood pressure.
